As with many Mac games, HOMM V is/was a pie made with many hands: original development by Ubisoft, Mac port by Freeverse (no longer around), marketing and sales (for me) through MacGameStore. That is, until a couple of months ago, when the game prompted me to re-enter my registration information and – surprise! – the server that checks and validates game-copy codes is now apparently offline. It's been tons of fun to play over the last nine years, and I come back to it regularly.

As a Mac user, the last compatible version to come out was HOMM V in 2006, and I have the DVD with a sticker displaying the serial and registration code for my copy. I really like the Heroes of Might and Magic series. Otherwise, their old product is still not functional on their end, and the gamer community has the right to continue to make it functional, at their own expense.ī) Gamer Community takes it upon itself to create the server/backend infrastructure to make the online functional again.Ī) Company releases on another platform, with online support.ī) IF the online support is directly compatible with their previous product, and their previous product works online again THEN the Gamer Community disables their online support.Ĭ) IF the online support is *not* directly compatible with their previous product, and their previous product does *not* work online again THEN nothing further is done.ĭ) IF the Company makes their online support function again THEN the Gamer Community disables their online support. If the company releases on another platform that is cross-compatible and reenables the online support for their previous platform, then the gamer community has to turn their online support off.

If the company makes it play online again, the gamer community has to turn their online support off. If the company that made the game doesn't make it possible to play it online, the gamer community has the right to make it work again, at their own expense. I don't think any rational gamers actually agree with them.
